Tennis Elbow

Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

Tennis elbow is a painful condition caused by overuse or degeneration of the tendons where the forearm muscles attach to the elbow. Despite its name, it can occur in anyone performing repetitive wrist movements (carpenters, painters, office workers).

Symptoms

Main symptoms of tennis elbow include:

  • Sharp or burning pain on the outer side of the elbow
  • Weak grip strength (difficulty turning doorknobs or holding cups)
  • Increased pain when using a computer mouse
  • Pain radiating to the forearm and wrist

Causes

Tennis elbow is typically caused by:

  • Repetitive wrist and elbow movements (tennis, golf, carpentry)
  • Office work (prolonged keyboard/mouse use)
  • Sudden, forceful arm movements

Treatment Options

Conservative (non-surgical) treatments:

  • Rest and Activity Modification: Avoiding pain-triggering movements
  • Ice application (15-20 minutes, 3-4 times daily)
  • Physical therapy
  • Taping/Bracing: Supporting tendons with elbow straps or wrist splints

Medical Interventions

  • PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma): Healing acceleration injection
  • Cortisone Injection: For severe inflammation cases

Surgical treatment (rarely, for cases unresponsive to 6-12 months of treatment):

  • Arthroscopic debridement
  • Tendon repair

When to See a Doctor?

  • If pain interferes with daily activities
  • If there's swelling or redness in the elbow
  • If pain persists for more than 2 weeks

Prevention Methods

  • Take frequent breaks during repetitive movements
  • Use ergonomic equipment (vertical mouse, wrist supports)
  • Perform elbow and wrist strengthening exercises
